The Grünhaus winery sits on a site once occupied by a Roman villa, and later a Benedictine Abbey. The south-facing vineyard that looms over the winery is divided into three Grosse Lage monopoles, which are vinified and bottled separately; Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg. Abtsberg was so named because it historically yielded the richest wine which was reserved for the abbot. The monks had to “make do” with the leanest wine from the coolest section of the slope known as Bruderberg, while the local gentry enjoyed a wine that was midships in terms of ripeness, from Herrenberg.
In recent years, of course, global warming and changing tastes have disrupted this qualitative hierarchy but the differences between the three wines remain pronounced. Maximin Grünhaus, then, is an estate steeped in history, but under incumbent winemaker Max von Schubert, whose family purchased it in 1882, it’s also one of the Mosel’s most dynamic estates – and one of our favourite addresses for both bone dry and fruity Rieslings. The dry Schloss Riesling and strikingly packaged feinherb (off-dry) Maximin Riesling are a brilliant introduction to a range that crescendos with a stunning Beerenauslese. Maximin Grünhaus is one of a number of fabulous new additions to Flint’s German portfolio.
