Based in the village of Winningen, in the lower Mosel, towards Koblenz, Weingut Löwenstein was established by Reinard Löwenstein in 1980, with an emphasis on top sites, a focus that still very much exists today. This part of the Mosel is characterised by its steep slopes, old terracing and includes the famous vineyards of Rottgen, Uhlen and Kirchberg. Today, the 15-hectare estate is run by Reinhard’s daughter, Sarah, who is zealous in maintaining the focus on the individual terroirs that the separate sites possess. While the estate makes some sensational sweet wines, the real focus is on the dry wines, which Sarah believes express their terroir much more dramatically without the adulteration of sugar. The variety in aromas and flavours of the various wines reflect the nuances of the soil and mean these are some of the most versatile food wines found in any single cellar.
