Peter Griebeler is articulate and ambitious, with a wry sense of humour. Having studied winemaking and completed internships at two of Germany’s most prestigious estates, Schlossgut Diel in the Nahe and Fritz Haag in the Mosel, Peter then worked as winemaker at ZGM. In 2014 he decided to return to the family estate in Zeltingen where things are on a much smaller artisan scale and very much focused on quality. A significant proportion of the vines are on the magnificent, vertiginous slopes of Sonnenuhr and Schlossberg. While also making some sweeter styles, Peter’s focus is on the dry (trocken) style, which highlights the terroir and minerality of his sites. Throughout the range, the natural ripeness of the grapes, achieved through good exposure and vineyard management, means that while the wines are dry (about six grams of residual sugar), they have a lovely mid-palate weight that prevents them from being rasping. The zing and vitality are all there but there is enough fruit to carry them.
