Leeuwin Estate would have a legitimate claim to First Growth status if such a classification existed in Australia. It was established in the late Seventies by Denis and Tricia and Horgan, who were drawn to Margaret River by its famous surf beaches, but were soon convinced – by none other than Robert Mondavi – of the its potential for grape growing.
Within a couple of decades, Leeuwin had become a reference point for Australian Chardonnay and Cabernet – just two of the varieties that thrive in Margaret River’s temperate climate (influenced by the Indian and Southern oceans which meet at Cape Leeuwin).
Leeuwin is today managed by Simone Furlong, daughter of Denis and Tricia, and winemaker Tim Lovett. A key development under their stewardship has been the refinement of the reds, notably the Art Series Shiraz.
The Art Series remains the apogee of Leeuwin’s range, but Prelude Chardonnay and Cabernet – made from Art Series quality fruit, but intended for earlier-drinking – are not to be missed. Equally impressive for the price are Siblings Sauvignon and Shiraz, wines that combine bright, juicy fruit with the freshness and finesse that are characteristic of Leeuwin Estate.
