Simon inherited a big chunk of his father’s vineyards (9 hectares) last year, but with the dreadful frost that hit at the beginning of April, he was on the back foot before he’d even started. Thankfully, this year he has a ‘normal’ vintage to play with.
Knowing that he would be inheriting a significant amount of vines in 2021, Simon had already started bottling wines under his own name, three years earlier, with some contracts for fruit that he had put in place and also with some fruit from some of his father’s vineyards. But in terms of sheer scale, the jump, almost overnight, is dramatic. But he doesn’t seem at all phased at the sudden progression and he has swapped geographical places with his father, so that he is now operating out of the same cuverie that Philippe used to use.
He is happy working the white wines slightly reductively and using whole bunches in the reds should the cuvées allow. Simon has already managed to create a nice buzz around him and his wines, and this range of ‘22s is going to do little to change that.
