It was back in the early days of the company, towards the end of the Noughties, when we first met Pierre Duroché in his small cuverie in the middle of Gevrey-Chambertin. Back then, still in his mid-twenties, he had no importer in the UK, in fact he didn’t have any importers at all. Pierre had just taken over from his father Gilles, who was always as welcoming as he was proud watching his son progressing. The wines showed promise and we bought some 2007 and have been lucky enough to have bought every vintage ever since.
Fifteen years on, Pierre is now firmly established as one of the best names, not just in Gevrey-Chambertin, but in the whole of the Côte de Nuits. His evolution into a superstar winemaker has been great to watch, even if it means a bit less wine finds its way to the UK these days as he now has importers all over the world. With around 8 hectares of often very old vines within the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, Pierre’s domaine is very much a true Gevrey domaine, although following his marriage to the delightful Marianne Cacheux in 2014, he now produces both a Vosne-Romanée and an Echezeaux from fruit from her father’s estate.
In fact, the charming couple are very much a team, working the vineyards, vinifying the wines, running the business and looking after their growing family, the youngest members of which will likely become the 6th generation of Durochés to run the domaine. In some ways, the style of the wines has remained true to the early days, when their purity and lightness of touch very much caught the eye. Unsurprisingly, the wines are more nuanced, intense and complex today, but they still express a varietal and terroir authenticity which is gorgeously mesmeric and excites all the purists who love Burgundy for just that reason.
With quality sky high and demand relentless, these are wines that we could sell several times over, but at all levels, they are worth seeking out and doing whatever is required to secure an allocation.
