Jean-François Coche, a private man of few words, has let his wines do the talking for him. Few Chardonnays radiate the energy and intensity of flavour which distinguish this domaine’s entire line-up from simple Bourgogne blanc through vineyard-designated Meursaults to grand cru Corton-Charlemagne. Exacting vineyard work ensures brilliantly rich, balanced raw materials; early harvesting preserves the acidity which imparts freshness and shape; lees-intensive barrel maturation refines the wines’ sumptuous textures. A small range of reds communicates the same gripping freshness and physicality of flavour. The wine is then bottled unfiltered.
Jean-François has technically taken retirement though in practice continues to be very present, particularly in the vineyards, Son Raphaël is now in charge of winemaking, therefore. He has worked full-time alongside his father for many years and seems very much cast in the Jean-François mould. The domaine is in ultra-safe, ultra-serious hands.
