Danbury is a small village lying just to the east of Chelmsford, in Essex, a few kilometres west of the famous salt-producing coastal town of Maldon. It was here, just over ten years ago, that the Bunker family hatched the idea to turn some of their agricultural land into vineyards. They carried out comprehensive soil analysis and found that the London clay soils would be perfect for growing serious Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Vines were planted in 2014, across three main plots, which in previous decades has been considered more suitable for training racehorses! Soil guru John Atkinson MW and Irish winemaker Liam Idzikowski were brought on board to ensure everything was done to the highest possible standard, including the construction of a new state of the art cuverie, that Liam designed himself. For our money, Danbury Ridge is the source of the UK’s finest non-sparkling Chardonnay and Pinot.
