This picturesque property 15 miles north of the town of Blaye is the source of some of our favourite Petit Château wines. It was established in 1884 by the great-grandparents of current proprietor/winemaker Alexia Eymas.Maison Neuve today consists of 45 hectares, primarily in the AOC of Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux. As Alexia explains, the soils here, so close to the Gironde Estuary, are too clay-rich for Cabernet Franc to thrive, but the wines have inherent freshness owing to the microclimate.Production is around 150,000 bottles annually but Alexia, who appears to have energy to burn, still finds time to indulge her hobby of long-distance running. Her other passion is rock’n’ roll music.Cuvée Alexia is a modern, fruit-driven blend of Malbec and Merlot, raised exclusively in tank. More classic in style and just as impressive is the barrique-aged Cuvée Prestige; 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s an exceptionally complex and refined Claret at this price point.
