Borgo del Tiglio

Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy

Nicola Manferrari took over the family estate in Cormòns, right in the heart of the Friulian Collio, in 1981, and has since forged a reputation for producing some of Italy’s greatest white wines (as well as an exemplary Merlot). Today, Nicola’s son Mattia increasingly calls the shots. The vineyards occupy three distinct terroirs: Brazzano, Ca’ delle Vallade and Ruttars.

Only after acquiring the vineyard in Ruttars, in 1989, did Nicola realise it was planted with multiple varietals (Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Friulano). Rather than grubbing up and re-planting, Nicola vinified the old vines as single plots with the intention of blending them, thus ‘Studio di Bianco’ was born. It is just one of a host of chiselled, breathtakingly pure yet textured wines made here. The majority spend at least nine months in barrel.
