Bass Phillip has a relatively low profile on these shores, but is regarded as a totemic property in Australia – and rightly so: these are some of the finest New World Pinots we’ve tasted. The estate was established in 1979 by Phillip Jones, an advocate of biodynamics and a winemaker as intuitive as he was analytical. The terroir here in South Gippsland is characterised by deep, mineral-rich soils, natural high humidity and cooler temperatures.
In 2020, the Bass Phillip was sold to a group of investors including Burgundian superstar, Jean-Marie Fourrier, who has gradually taken on the mantle of head-winemaker. There have been no radical changes under his stewardship, but a process of fine-tuning in the vineyard and winery that is borne out in the wines quality and consistency of the wines.
