Aubert Wines is one of the most prestigious names in US fine wine.
Mark Aubert had worked previously as a winemaker at Peter Michael and at Colgin Cellars, while his wife and partner, Teresa, worked on the business side at several wineries, as well as other organisations outside the wine industry.
They started Aubert in the late 1990s to focus on producing terroir-driven Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Sourcing grapes from across Sonoma Coast, Carneros, Russian River, and Napa Valley, they’ve since built Aubert Wines into one of the most sought-after wineries in California.
The couple now own three vineyards themselves, where they practice, in their own words, “elegant farming”. When they do purchase grapes, they do so with an expectation of “fifty years of production”, seeking out long term relationships where they can influence every aspect of the grape growing, in marginal sites where grapes express their origins clearly.
This is a winery with an obsession on quality. Yields are kept purposefully low, with barrel fermentation, and considered use of new French oak. Miniscule in quantity, and consistently scored highly amongst critics, the wines of Aubert are, for many, as close as California comes to top Burgundy, with demand to match.
